Located in the North Coast, Fort Santo Domingo is one of the oldest existing architectures of Taiwan on the list of the Grade One National Historical Sites. Originally, it had been built in 1628 at Tamsui District by the Spanish who occupied North Taiwan since the 16th century. After being destroyed twice, the Fort was reconstructed again in 1644 at the site by the Dutch whose power expanded from South to North. With the 1.9-meter-thick stone wall, it appeared impregnable against any engines of war that those early days could produce. The Dutch named it “Fort Antonio”, while the locals called it “Red-haired Castle”.
(Why? In local Chinese eyes, the Dutch were red-haired people, so…)

Through the periods of Lord Zheng (Ming Dynasty) and Qing Dynasty, til the mid-19th century, Fort Santo Domingo lost its important role and remained a ghost place after years of abandonment. Defeated during the Opium Wars, the Qing government had to open Chinese ports and cities unwillingly to western countries, including 4 ports in Taiwan to UK and France. The British took over Fort Santo Domingo and in 1891 built a beautiful Victorian house as consular residence nearby. After 1972, UK broke the diplomatic relationships with Taiwan, the Fort passed through the hands of Australian and Americans. Until 1980, Taiwan government succeeded to retrieve the land from the British and reopen to the public for free as a national historical relics.
Nowadays, it becomes a tourist hot-spot of Tamsui district. After climbing up to the steep hill, you will enjoy the amazing view of Tamsui River along Guanyin Mountain while standing in front of Fort Santo Domingo or the Former British Consular Residence. The old cannons near the ancient fortress definitely give you a flashback to the past colonial times. Then return to the present, you couldn’t help sighing over the quick vanishment of prosperity and the cruelty of time.
