As one of the most beautiful villages in France, Gordes from the Provence region is well-known for its special stone architecture on a giant calcareous rock from the monts de Vaucluse. All houses were built on different levels in picturesque disorder, expanding until the top of the rock. The whole village looks like a huge stone castle standing above the deep valleys, gorgeous and precipitous, as if it’s made by the hand of the God. The tourists from different countries are all stunned by its beauty, including myself who set the foot on the edge of a cliff, shaking in the rainstorm while marveling at this fabulous scene.

Gordes is part of Luberon Valley, the fertile beautiful land, 85km from Marseille, about one hour drive (Well, if you drive a Ferrari or Lamborghini, it’s another matter). In early history, it was occupied by the Roman Empire. After many centuries’ changes and the death of King René of Provence, it was incorporated into the kingdom of France in 1481. Like Marseille people, the Gordien resident is full of “revolution” enthusiasm and was awarded the medal, the Croix de guerre, because of the active resistance against German Nazis during World War II. Some parts of the village were rebuilt after the war. Also, a statue of martyrs was erected in the front square of the church to commemorate the history.

Today, tourism has become a major industry in Gordes, besides growing olive trees and grapes. No matter it’s sunny or stormy, this village perched on a rock attracts numerous visitors from every corner of the globe, arriving on their bikes or a roaring tourist bus. Mr.T and I chose a “great” day to go there: sometimes grey, sometimes drizzling, sometimes stormy. That kept my mood changing non-stop. Although it was very far from the cheerful impression of Provence, well, I had to admit that this unusual wet experience was quite pleasant and romantic, haha. Passing through the road with pretty Platanus trees, we took the road to the mountain. Local stone houses lay among luxuriant vegetations, so neat and elegant in the rain, as a dreamland described in novels. “Honey, look at the wall of the courtyard. It’s one of the characteristics of this area. According to the sizes and shapes, all stones were piled together without any cement. Very natural and beautiful, isn’t it?” introduced Mr.T, enthusiastically as a tourist guide while driving.

Unfortunately, the rain became heavier and heavier when we left those lovely houses behind. Finally, our car reached the end of the road. All of a sudden, a fantastic panoramic view appeared in front of my eyes! An impregnable stone “castle” emerged among the green valleys and stood silently in the rainstorm like a cool majestic lord. How magnificent and graceful! No doubt everyone was stunned on the edge of the cliff. It looked even more special and mysterious during this rainy day, due to the mix of rain and floating mist haunting the deep valleys, which created a dreamlike scene as in legends. Mr.T and I went inside this vertiginous stone city after the heavy rain stopped. The figures of other people gradually appeared on the broad streets. Watching the old houses and shops on the steep rock, we could feel the history and the warmth of real life, filled with peace and romantic touch. The fresh air carrying the vegetation’s fragrance after the rain cheered me up, as well as the charming Luberon Valley: the endless hills, lush green fields, large tracts of olive trees, and huge vineyards extending till the horizon- yapping, what a cozy and beautiful life in the mountains! Oh, My! How can I stop yearning for it in the rest of my life?!

001 Great start of the trip, grrrr
