It’s a charming mountain village near the sea, a small town boom and bust for its gold mine, a well-known nostalgic place featured in the historical drama film of TW “A city of Sadness” which won the Golden Lion award at Venice Film Festival, as well as the similar scenery used as a model in the famous Japanese fantasy anime movie “Spirited Away”, the Best Animated Feature Film of Academy Award in 2002. Yes, that’s Jiufen, a hotspot tourist attraction in northeast Taiwan, especially popular among Japanese visitors.

Located in Ruifang District of New Taipei City, Jiufen was just a tiny isolated mountain village of 9 families during the early Qing Dynasty, thus it would request “9 portions” for living materials when the shipments arrived from town. Later, Jiufen (“9 portions” in Chinese) became the name of the village (Actually, many names of TW places sound very interesting). During the early 19th century, gold was discovered in the area. With the gold rush, this village turned into a prosperous town and reached its peak during the Japanese rule. Shengping Theater, the first theater in Taiwan was build here in 1934, bringing joyful entertainment to the town which was praised as Little Shanghai, or Little Hongkong.
After the mine was completely shut down in 1971, Jiufen quickly declined and was almost forgotten for a while. In 1990’s, with the big hit of TW drama film “A City of Sadness” directed by Hou Hsiao-hsien, which presented a Jiufen family story during 2-28 Incident (a taboo topic in Taiwan history), the town of Jiufen revived due to the film’s success. Its nostalgic scenery, the charm of mountain life, the pretty houses on the green hills facing the blue sea attracted numerous people to visit. The tourists boom happened again in the early 21th century when the Japanese fantasy anime movie “Spirited Away” achieved a global popularity. Hayao Miyazaki, the film director and manga artist denied personally in public that Jiufen was absolutely ever used as a model in the film. However, it never stopped the passion of Japanese fans to rush into this mountain town for their exploration, haha.
Ok, let’s check it out in a gloomy rainy day.
