For over 700 years history, through Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, the naxi family of Mu (木)had always been the local magistrate of Lijiang, a position that could be inherited by generations. the surname of Mu (木) was granted by the fist emperor of Ming dynasty, Zhu Yuanzhang, coming from his royal family name Zhu(朱), which showed the great appreciation and trust of the central government of Han. The Mu were wise, open-minded to learn the culture, language and technology from the Han people (the majority Chinese in central china). They preserved well their own culture and Dongba religion, meanwhile encouraged other religions as Taoism, Buddhism and Lamaism to develop in Lijiang. That’s why the city became multicultural with incredible thriving history. Well-known to be intelligent, elegant-mannered and honorable men, the Mu were regarded as the Heavenly King for their general attitude to the world, standing out among the group of Southwest chieftains.

The Mu built their palatial residence in the south of Lijiang old city, a group of houses along the Lion Hill. It faced the east, not the south according to Han people’s Fengshui theory, implied the meaning of thriving and prosperous in the sun, obviously an adoration of the Sun in Dongba religion. The location was a perfect harmony of Taiji, enjoying the masculine sight of Lion Hill and gentle feminine temperament of Jade River, with the dragon (snow mountain) on the left, the tiger (hill) on the right. The palace combined the styles of Naxi, Bai, Tibetan and Han architecture. The exquisite paintings and cared patterns on the doors & windows displayed the Naxi’s extraordinary talents in architecture. Unfortunately, Mu’s residence was destroyed during Cultural Revolution and a huge earthquake in 1996. What we see now is the houses rebuilt in 1999, about 17,333 square meters with 400-meter long axis line, only half size of the original. After paying 60rmb ticket, Mr.T and I walked inside and got shocked: OMG! The palace looked like brand new! We got a little disappointed by these shining houses, too, apparently a mini-copy of Han’s Palace in the Forbidden City. There’s not much characteristics of Naxi style, actually.
