Among three greatest temples of Master Qingshui in Taipei (Sanxia, Wanhua, Danshui), the one located in Sanxia area has the longest history, which is highly praised as the Shrine of Oriental Art, the religious center of Sanxia residents since the 18th century and the historical symbol of Anxi immigrants from Fujian into Taiwan.

The Great Master Qingshui was a famous Buddhist monk with religious name Puzu in Northern Song Dynasty (about the 11th century). His monastry lay in Qingshui Yan, Anxi, therefore people respectfully called him the Great Master Qingshui instead of Master Puzu. Well-known by his supernatural power to bring rain numeral times during a period of drought in Fujian by speaking the dharma, through the meditation, he was also known by his achievements to solicit contributions from public to build many roads and bridges. Furthermore, Master Qingshui gained great knowledge in Chinese medicinal herbs and cured lots of patients. No doubt why he became a legend. After he passed away, the locals built many shrines to worship him as a deified person in folk religion, and one of the guardians for Tie Guanyin Tea farms.
Originally built in 1769, Taipei’s Sanxia Temple of the Great Master Qingshui experienced 3 times renovation and reconstruction. The last one was in 1947, mainly designed by Taipei artist, Professor Li Meishu, with delicate wood roofs, rock foundations, consisting of 5 beautiful doors and 3 grand halls. When you walk along the corridors, you will be amazed by the marvelous wood carvings, stone statues everywhere, telling the historical stories and folk tales. Especially those in the vaults plated by gold foils will stun everybody, no matter during the day or at night.
