As the most famous national scenic areas of Taiwan, A-Li Mountains & Sun-Moon Lake have been the very popular spots among Mainland Chinese tourists (esp the massive groups), as well as the must-goes for other foreign visitors. However, the crazy crowds on the yacht wharf, the terrible noises of people, the boat agents haunting on the roadside who keep nagging “ A boat ride, miss /sir? ” absolutely spoil the peaceful scenic area, which suddenly brings me back to West Lake of Hangzhou where Mr.T and I used to walking along the bank in the shades of weeping willows. Then the voice of tourist guides from the blue water reminds me of Sun-Moon Lake in Taiwan: “ Ladies & Gentlemen, here’s the historical site of Sun-Moon Lake, the place where the former president Chiang Kai-Shek…”

Located in Central Taiwan (Yuchi Township, Nantou County), Sun-Moon Lake is the largest body of fresh water in the Island, a natural source of hydroelectric power. Surrounded by the green mountains where gather the villages of Thao tribe ( one of Taiwan’s aboriginal tribes ), the Lake has the vast mirror-smooth surface blessed with charming scenery. Due to the different water colours, it has been divided into Sun Lake and Moon Lake by the tiny island called Lalu. From the pale to deep blue, Sun-Moon Lake looks like a jewel lying among the flourishing forests, reflecting the historical Chinese pagoda and Buddhist temples in the clear water. On a sunny day, its surface dances and sparkles in the light, while the dazzling beauty fades away into alluring mysterious when the mist rolls from the hill tops. In any weather, at any time of day, the Lake presents a variety of charms as a stunning beauty, a real enchanting place to relax.
During a hot summer day, Mr.T and I finally paid a visit to this tourist attraction. Far away from the roaring crowds, we took a quiet hiking trail along the Lake, enjoying the pleasant view of nature, breathing the fresh air in the woods, and listening to the birds’ singing somewhere in the valley. Life is beautiful, isn’t it?
P.S. There’re about 14 hiking trails around Sun-Moon Lake for sightseeing & leisure activities. Well, if you’re lazy, the cable car would be a nice choice to have a bird’s-eye-view. The best-known trail, of course, is the cross-lake cycling trail recognized by CNN in 2012 as one of ten most beautiful cycling trails in the world. It has been quite trendy to rent a bike to make a 30KM tour if you’re in a good shape.By the way, I also see a kind of luxury club offering the helicopter tour above Sun-Moon Lake. OMG, a helicopter…
