Referring to XOOMEI, it’s quite familiar and impressive when you listen to Mongolian music. This unusual singing style requires a vocalist to produce two or three notes simultaneously by tightening his throat, deep, charming, as a mysterious call from thousands years ago, touching the soul of every listener.

Among the countries where this traditional vocal skill exists, the study and development of XOOMEI are priority fields of National Art.It has been considered as National Treasure in Mongolia, Intangible Cultural Heritage in China, the Soul of Nation in Tuva. The Tuvans mostly live in Republic of Tuva (a federal subject of Russia), some in Xin-jiang Autonomous Region of China and Mongolia Republic. The Tuvans are said to be the earliest to sing XOOMEI, which not only imitate the sound of nature, but focus on the melodies. They compose music with lyrics; describe the rustic joyousness, beautiful natural scenery by their special ways of singing & whistling. Thanks to Ted Levin, the American human musicologist, a Tuva music band Huun-Huur-Tu appeared in the vision of US audiences at the end of 1990’s. Its four members brought their home-made traditional instruments on the stage, impressed the world by their unique vocal skills and mysterious music of Tuvans. “It is both very spiritual and down to earth, grounded in a strong sense of place, yet its appeal is universal.” claimed by Dirty Linen.

The followings are my favourite, Old Melodies by Sainkho Namtchylak, the famous extreme-vocalist, Amdy Baryp by YAT-KHA, winner of the Best Asian Group in BBC’s Global Music Awards in 2001, and In Search of a Lost Past by Huun-Huur-Tu, the world famous Tuva band.

  4. In Search of a Lost Past
